McAlpine grew up surrounded by natural landscape, in a family that worked in construction. Finding inspiration in these two contradicting factors, his work explores the ongoing relationship between man and nature, through subtle compositions and his own fascination with colour.

Interior spaces occasionally hint at the exterior; warm light leaks through the dominating colours. Painters such as Hopper and Hockney are highly influential for McAlpine; he is drawn to the subtlety of their compositions, in relation to their vibrant colour palettes.

The impact of the pandemic has influenced the composition of his work: painting scenes that appear relatively quiet in their nature, whilst also taking some inspiration from previous photographs that highlight a greater sense of nostalgia.

"While exploring virtual exhibitions, I feel like some are too concerned with recreating a single interior space. Whilst the pandemic has lost the sense of physicality, which is paramount to most artworks, I feel like artists can benefit further through the freedom of display"

Henry recommends the network New Blood Art, a platform for young, emerging artists wanting to sell work and get their name out in the art world.
