HELEDD ROBERTS

All three of these pieces focus on colour and how they make the subject stand out.

Exploring ideas of subtle surrealism has been an integral element of Heledd's recent work.

Heledd loves experimenting with distorting images to play with the subject’s identity. All three were painted with oils on canvas.

Heledd's most recent painting, this piece uses colour to play with the tones and facial features of the subject in order to explore the idea of identify.

The subtly spiralled background adds another dimension which takes the image further from reality. Heledd hopes to paint another similar piece in the upcoming months.

This piece is a straightforward one. I wanted the focus to be on the subject only. A block, bright colour as the background and her forward gaze ensured this.

This painting experiments with surrealism and the idea of identity and disassociation.

In planning the painting, Heledd manipulated the original image using Illustrator and played with the colours and patterns.

What has your art practice meant to you in the last year?

During the first month of the first lockdown, I spent every evening painting. I didn’t realise it at the time, but this had a significant impact on my ability to keep it together. It gave me a purpose and something to enjoy amid so much unknown.

During the last year, being able to paint has provided a creative outlet to balance my Physics and Philosophy degree and I’m very grateful for that.
